even. He had an athletic build and was the star of the basketball team. He had sandy blonde hair and blue eyes.
“Do you think I don’t know that? I’ve tried time and time again to find away to tell her. But I can’t think of the right way to tell her without hurting her.” Troy said.
“I wouldn’t worry about it. I mean as much pain as she’s put you through?”
“You’re right Nikki. I don’t know why I’m worrying so much about it.” Troy looked at Nichole and thought about how glad he was that he had her as a friend. She was six inches shy of five feet. She had curly, red hair that fell to her knees. Her violet eyes were filled with adventure.
“You’re worrying so much because you care about her. I mean you’ve been going out for seven months and now she pulls this on you. I’m sorry but you deserve better.” Nikki said as she put her hand on Troy’s arm.
“I do, do I? And who is better then Mel? You?”
“If you’re gonna be that way…” Nikki said as she started to walk away.
“Nikki, wait.” Troy said reaching out and grabbing her arm. “I didn’t mean it that way. It’s just she’s gotten under my collar. With the whole thing that she might have been pregnant and then she supposedly had a miscarriage…I don’t know. I shouldn’t take it out on you and I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it Troy. I’m getting use to you being so touchy. I just hope she doesn’t make you explode. She lit the fuse and hopefully you have a long one.”
“Thanks a lot.”
“Oh here comes Miss Perfect now.”
“Hi Troy.” Melissa said as she gave Troy a kiss on the cheek. She looked at Nichole with disgust. “Hello Nichole.”
“Its nice to see you too Melissa.” Nikki said. Mel had long dark hair that fell to mid-back. Her dark brown eyes were always filled with a look of suspicion. She was about five feet tall. People stared when they saw Troy and Melissa together, with the difference in height. “Troy, I’ll catch you later. Don’t forget what we talked about.”
“Bye Nikki.” Troy said as he waved goodbye. “Mel, we need to talk.”
“I was thinking the same thing. I really don’t know why you hang out with Nichole.”
“That’s not the talk I had in mind. But, I hang out with Nikki, because we’re friends. Friends hang out. Though I’m sure you don’t ‘hang out’ with your friends. I’m sure you use some other word.”
“What has gotten in to you, honey?” Mel asked reaching up to touch Troy’s cheek. “It’s Nichole isn’t it? I wish you would stop seeing her. She’s bad for my… I mean your image.”
“Nikki is not what has gotten in to me. It’s you. I think we need to take a step back on our relationship or lack there of. I’m tired of all the lies, half-truths and secrets.”
Melissa, wide-eyed, lowered her hand and stared at Troy.
“You heard me right Melissa. I think we should take a breather, perhaps even date other people.”
“But why?”
“Weren’t you listening?” Troy asked. “I have to get to class.” Troy shut his locker and walked away.
“Troy, wait!” Mel said as she started after him.
“Mel, I can’t be late for class, if I get one more tardy in Mr. Jonson’s I’ll be suspended from the team.”
“Troy, I know how much the team means to you. But what about me, don’t I mean anything to you?”
“Mel, you mean a lot to me. That’s why I want us to take a step back in our relationship.” Troy said as he stopped in front of Mr. Jonson’s classroom. “Let’s talk after school.”
“If we don’t talk now, we don’t talk again. I need closure on this.”
“Well then I guess this is goodbye.” Troy said. He bent down and gave Melissa a kiss goodbye. “I’ll see you around.”
“You’re going to wish you hadn’t broke up with me.”
Troy shrugged his shoulders and walked into class. He wasn’t pleased with the way things had gone but…there was nothing he could do about it. He was just glad that he had told Melissa the truth, even if it hurt her.
“So how did it go?” Nikki asked as she walked up to Troy at lunchtime. She set her tray next to his as they waited in line to pay.
“Not as good as I had hoped. But both us will survive.” He said as he moved forward a little. “I’m just afraid of what she’s going to tell everybody. She said that I was going to wish that I hadn’t broken up with her.”
“Maybe the way it turned out was for the best. I know it’s going to be hard getting back into the swing of being single again. But hey you’ll manage.” Nikki had reached the register and paid for her meal. Troy and she went and sat down at their normal table. It looked out at the courtyard that had been made by the construction class and decorated with wildflowers by the environment club. “Anything else you want to share or are we leaving it as is?”
“Let’s leave it as is right now.” Troy said as he picked up his sandwich. “Besides, I need to leave some things for my sessions with the great doctor Nichole.”
Nikki laughed and playfully hit him on the arm. “I’m not that great.”
“That’s what you think.” Troy said as he took a bite of his sandwich. “Ham and cheese...my favorite.”
“That’s not true. Your favorite is turkey, lettuce, and tomato. Ham and cheese is your second favorite.”
“So sue me for getting my sandwiches mixed up. How did you get to know so much about me anyways?”
“I listened.”
“Yea you do.” Troy said. He finished off his sandwich and opened up his bag of chips. “Any major plans for the weekend?”
“Do I ever have major plans for the weekend?” Nikki asked. “I’m stuck working Friday night and thankfully I have off on Saturday and Sunday.”
“You want to do something?” He asked taking a sip of his cherry soda.
“Perhaps, what did you have in mind?”
“I was thinking…well for my benefit a visit to ‘the spot’ for some doctoring. Then maybe dinner and a movie.”
“Oh, ‘the spot’!” Nikki said. Then all of a sudden she gets a look of disgust on her face. “Here comes Miss Perfect’s henchman.”
Troy looked over his shoulder and saw Kimberly coming towards them. Kimberly was a couple of inches taller then Melissa. She has strawberry blonde hair that was curled under her ears.
“Troy, Melissa was wondering if you would consider rethinking your proposal this morning before you so rudely left to get to class.” Kimberly asked.
“If she is referring to me dumping her. No I will not rethink it.” Troy said, trying his hardest to stay calm. “If she would like to talk about it after school like I asked I would be willing. But last I heard she didn’t want to do that.”
“I’ll get back with her response. Stay here please.” Kimberly walked off heading to the table that Melissa and the other cheerleaders were sitting. Kimberly bent down and whispered to Melissa. Mel looked towards Troy and Nikki and shook her head and said something to Kim. Kim headed back over to Troy and Nikki.
“She said yes, she will talk to you after school. On one condition…Nichole isn’t there.”
“Nichole wasn’t going to be there in the first place.”
“Alright. She’ll meet you at the bleachers around three-thirtyish.” Then looking at Nichole. “You better be no where in sight.” Then she walked away.
“I guess there might be a chance for you to get back together after all.” Nikki said looking at her food. She hadn’t eaten much; she couldn’t, knowing that Melissa might get her claws into Troy again.
“I guess so.” Troy said as he got up and threw away his trash. He looked down at Nikki. “Are you done?” She nodded and leaned back. He picked up her tray and disposed of her uneaten meal. “You should eat more Nikki.”
“Preoccupied I guess.” She said.
“Anything you want to talk about?”
“Not right now. And even if I did…not here.” She said getting up also. “It can wait till Saturday.”
“Okay, but I’m here for you Nikki.”
“Nikki! Troy!” A voice called behind them.
“I thought she was still on vacation.” Troy said.
“Did I forget to mention she comes back today?” Nikki said as they both turn around. Looking back at them was a girl of average height. She had dirty blonde hair that was cut short.
“Oh my gosh! I am so happy to see you guys.” The girl said with a smile on her face.
“It’s good to see you too Amanda.” Troy said.
“How was vacation?” Nikki asked.
“Vacation was a blast. I’m so sorry I didn’t write. But when you’re gone for a month the card would have gotten here after I got home. I have like tons of pictures to show you though. I mean when you take 4 rolls of pictures a day…it adds up.” Amanda said as she quick gave each of them a hug. “Anything new here?”
“Troy broke up with Melissa.” Nikki said bluntly, but Amanda saw a hint of hope in her eye.
“Nikki, you didn’t have to go tell her that.”
“It’s true Troy? You really did it?”
“Well…yes and no. We’re going to talk after school. She wants to try and persuade me to change my mind. She wants to be the one to break up with me.”
“Sounds like her.” Amanda said. She reached in her backpack and pulled out some envelopes. “You wanna look at pictures?”
“Amanda you’ve been away for too long. Lunch is almost over. We’ll look at them tomorrow.” Nikki said. Just then the bell sounded for the end of lunch. Nikki and Troy headed towards their lockers to get the books they would need for afternoon classes. Amanda followed them like a lost puppy.
“It’s going to be hard to get back in the swing of things.” Amanda said. It was convenient that their lockers were so close to each other. “But it was worth it.” Amanda went to her locker, which was five lockers away from Nikki’s, which was only two away from Troy’s.
“We’re going to be hearing about this vacation for oh the rest of the school year.” Nikki said quietly so that only Troy would hear her.
“Isn’t that the truth? Maybe she’ll surprise us and it’ll only be one and a half months rather then three months.”
“We better hurry, we’ll be late for AB.”
“We wouldn’t want to be late for advanced bio, now would we.” Troy said as he shut his locker and waited for Nikki to finish up so they could walk together. “I know I shouldn’t be nervous about talking to Melissa, but I am.”
“You’re afraid that she’ll be able to change your mind.” Nikki said shutting her locker. “Amanda, I’ll see eighth hour.”
“Ok! Have fun in AB you guys.” Amanda said shutting her locker and heading towards the band room.
“I have a feeling I’m not going to learn a whole lot in graphic art today.” Nikki said as they walked up the stairs to class. They reached the room and Troy opened the door for her. “Amanda will want me to look at the pictures.”
“Yep.” Troy said following her in. He then bumped into her. “Hey what’s the idea?” He then looked up and saw that everyone was staring at them.
“Did I miss something?” Nikki asked looking up at Troy and then at their fellow classmates. One of Troy’s friends walked up to them.
“Rumor is Troy,” He said. “That you dumped Melissa for Nikki.
“Nick, just who started that rumor?” Troy asked. Nick, who is a foot shorter, looked up at Troy. His hazel eyes looking deep into Troy’s blue ones. Nick normal had red hair, but had recently shaved it off.
“I’ll give you one guess. Her name starts with a K and she hangs out with Melissa.”
“They had to drag you into this Nikki…I’m sorry.”
“I was already in it Troy.” Nikki said sitting down.
“Kim and Melissa are gonna wish they hadn’t started the rumor.” Troy said sitting down also. “I can’t do anything now but I will after class.”
“You aren’t going to do anything stupid are you?” Nick and Nikki asked at the same time.
“No, I’m not.” Toy said.
All during class Nikki was worried about what Troy had planned. The rumor had struck a nerve with her. She had never told anyone, but she suspected that Troy knew, that she had feelings for him. When the bell rang to indicate that class was done, Troy jumped out of his seat knocking the chair over.
“Nikki, can you take care of that for me. I have to go find Kimberly and Melissa.” He left with out waiting for her to respond.
“Sure Troy, whatever you want.” Nikki said quietly as she got up, than leaning over, picked up the chair.
“Why is he in such a rush?” Nick asked coming up next to her.
Nikki only shrugged her shoulders as she and Nick left the classroom. They each headed in separate directions, each going to a different class. Nikki had calculus next, with Troy. She wondered if Troy would be in class. She took her time getting to class. She reached the door just as the bell rang. Sighing, she opened the door and went to her seat.
“Nichole you’re late. Do you have a reason?” The teacher asked.
“No, Mrs. Kline, I don’t.”
“Nichole, I’ll give you a warning this time. Once more and you get a detention.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
About ten minutes into class Troy opened the door. He walked to Mrs. Kline’s desk, putting a piece of paper on it then taking his seat behind Nikki.
“So nice of you to join us Troy.” Mrs. Kline said. “I’m assuming the piece of paper is your excuse.”
“Yes, Mrs. Kline. I think it’s quite a good reason. I’m sure you won’t think so.”
“I’ll be the judge of what I think and don’t think.” She picked up the paper. On it was written, in Troy’s handwriting: ‘Mrs. Kline, I’m sorry for my tardiness today in your class. But I felt it was more important to save the name of a good friend. Troy.’ “Troy, I believe I know what you are talking about so I will accept this accuse.”
Nikki tried to pay attention in class, but couldn’t help but wonder what the note said. She quick scribbled a note to Troy asking what it said. Then pretending to stretch she dropped it on his desk. He opened it and read it.
“Don’t worry about it.” He whispered in her ear.
When the bell rang to let them know class was done, Nikki whirled in her seat.
“Troy, why were you late? You haven’t been late for Mrs. Kline’s class yet.”
“I told you not to worry about it. Now hurry up or you’ll be late for the viewing of the pictures.” Troy said getting and then offering his hand to Nikki.
“Alright, I’m going.”
“Nikki, meet me by the bleachers at three twenty.” He said and then he was gone.
Nikki walked to graphic arts by herself. Usually Troy walked with her because his last class was just down the hall from hers. She sighed as she sat down. She looked at the dry erase board and saw that it was a lab day. So officially she only had to be there for attendance. She pulled out a notebook so she could write Troy a letter, feeling it would be more personal if it were handwritten.
‘Dear Troy,
I’m sure it’s weird getting a letter from me. I mean we can talk in person. No reason to write. But what I have to say I can’t say in person. I’m worried about you. I mean the relation you had with Melissa wasn’t healthy. Like I said before you can do better and I don’t mean me.’
She stopped. She actually would be perfect for him. But she knew that when they first meet that they would only be friends, nothing more. Everyone teased her about things starting out as friends and getting serious.
‘I guess I’m trying to say that there are more girls out there. Some that are honest and true. That won’t give you lie after lie. I know you’ll find someone else. I do have faith that there is someone out there. You’re soul mate. Laugh all you want. I don’t care. You never seem to take what I say seriously…I won’t bore you any more. I’m sure this will all go in one ear and out the other.
Always,
NICHOLE’
She reread her letter, content with the way it was written; she ripped it out of the notebook. Just then Amanda came up.
“You want to look at pictures?”
“Amanda I’m not really in the mood. I promised Mitch that I’d write him today.”
“You and your pen pals.” Amanda said. “After class then.”
“No I have to meet Troy at the bleachers at…three twenty I think he said.”
“Oh…okay.” Amanda sounded disappointed.
“I’ll tell you what. I have off Sunday. We can get together then.”
“Really?” Amanda said.
“Really.”
“OK!” Amanda said as she went to find some one else to torture with pictures.
Nikki smiled as she watched her friend go. She took another piece of paper and started to compose the letter to her long-time pen pal, Mitch.
‘Dear Mitch, March 3rd
I was so happy to get your letter in the mail. I’m glad that the whole moving into your own place went smoothly. I’ll have to come visit you one of these days. Maybe after graduation, I can plan a trip out to Montana..
Today was Amanda’s first day back after visiting her Grandma in Texas.. She said she took four rolls of pictures each day, that’s 120 rolls of film, that’s 3,420 pictures. I’m going to have so many pictures to look at…it’s going to be boring. I would have gotten tortured during graphic arts (which is what I’m in right now) except I wanted to write you. I also have to meet Troy after school.
Speaking of Troy, he finally broke up with Melissa. I was shocked. He actually listened when I told him he should stop the relation. The only problem is she wants to meet him after school, in hopes of rekindling the flame I guess.’
The bell rang and Nikki realized she’d have to finish the letter when she got home tonight. She shut the notebook and stuffed it in her backpack. She got up and walked to her locker. She quickly got the books she needed to do homework that night. She grabbed her jacket and than shut her locker. She walked towards the bleachers. It was three fifteen. She reached the bleachers just as her watch read three twenty. Troy was already there waiting.
“Just on time. That’s one thing I like about you Nikki.”
“I aimed to please.” Nikki said. “Now I can only be here for ten minutes you know.”
“I know. Hopefully, this will settle things. I want you here for when I talk to Mel.”
“If I’m here you lose all chance of getting back together with Miss Perfect.”
“Who said I wanted to get back with Mel?”
“I just assumed…I guess I shouldn’t assume.”
“You’re right, you shouldn’t assume. But that’s never stopped you before.”
“Nope it hasn’t has it?”
“No it hasn’t.” Troy said. “Look here comes Mel and Kim.”
“I should get going then.” Nikki said.
“No stay. Please.” Troy said just as Mel and Kim reached them.
“I thought she wasn’t going to be here.” Mel said as she looked at Nikki.
“Well I said she wasn’t going to be, but you have your second in command so I thought I’d bring mine.” Troy said. “Besides if you hadn’t involved her in the rumors. She gives her another right to be here.”
“I don’t know what rumor your talking about.” Mel said. “Kim do you know what he’s talking about?”
“I don’t believe I do.” Kim said.
“Like hell you don’t.” Nikki almost screamed.
“Nikki calm down.” Troy said placing his hand on her shoulder. “We both know that they know what we’re talking about.”
“That doesn’t change the fact that they’re denying it.”
“I know.” Troy said. Then looking at Mel. “I don’t care what you do, but as far as you’re concerned, the rumor is true.”
“You mean you dumped me to go out with her?” Mel said pointing a finger at Nikki.
“Ah so you do know the rumor. Which means you lied, which is one of the reasons I can’t be with you anymore.” Troy said.
“What? I mean I just assumed that’s what the rumor was or is.” Mel said.
“I don’t fucking think so.” Nikki said taking a step closer to Mel. “The only way you could know it is if you heard it or started it. I’m thinking the latter.”
“It wasn’t Mel, it was me.” Kim said slowly, stepping forward. “Mel only had the idea to spread a rumor. I went ahead and spread it.”
“You had no right. That was a stupid rumor to start. Everybody knows we’re just friends.” Nikki said.
“True but sometimes serious relations start when people are just friends. And that’s how everyone will think about it.” Mel said with a smirk on her face.
“Well if that’s the way you feel, I guess Nikki’s my date to the Spring Formal.”
“What?” Nikki and Mel said at the same time.
“Nikki, I would be honored if you’d accompany me to the Spring Formal.” Troy said.
“Sure I’d also be honored to accompany you.”
“No I don’t think so. This isn’t what I had planned.” Mel said.
“What you had planned?” Troy asked.
“I was going to dump you instead, but Kim goofed it up.” Said Mel.
“Nikki, we’re done here. Can I give you a lift home?” Troy asked.
“Yes, thank you.” Nikki said reaching for Troy’s hand. “That’s very thoughtful of you honey.”
Troy smiled; he grabbed Nikki around the waist and lifted her up. He set her down on the bleachers so she was now only a few inches shorter then him.
“Troy what are you doi…” Nikki started to say but Troy stopped her with a kiss.
“When he pulled away, Nikki was blushing, “You’ll have to practice not blushing when I kiss you.” Troy whispered so only she could hear him.
“Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for you to kiss me like that?” Nikki asked in a hoarse whisper.
“As long as you’ve known me?” Troy said with a mischievous smile on his face.
“Pretty much.” Nikki said.
“I hate to break up all this romantic bull shit.” Mel said. “But you are going to wish you hadn’t dumped me for Repunzle.”
“My name isn’t Repunzle, Miss Perfect.” Nikki said with a smirk on her face.
“That’s right I am Miss Perfect.” Mel said as she was starting to get angry. Her face was slowly turning red.
“You are so far from it.” Troy said under his breath.
Mel walked over to Troy and demanded, “What did you say?”
“I said you are so far from it.” Troy repeated.
Mel reached up and slapped Troy on the cheek. His face was tomato red where she hit him. Before Troy or Mel could do anything Nikki had jumped off the bleachers and punched Mel in the face. Mel reached up and covered her nose, but bleed still seeped through her perfectly manicured fingers.
“I’d go put ice on that if I were you.” Nikki said as she started walking away. She looked over her shoulder. “By the way Mel, never slap my boyfriend again, or I’ll make you even less perfect.”
“Why you little bitch.” Mel said.
Nikki spun on her heel so fast that Mel stepped back. “You’re damn right I’m a little bitch and don’t you forget it.”
Troy walked over to Nikki and took her hand in his. “Yes but remember you’re my little bitch.” With that said he leaned down and kissed her. Nikki stood on tiptoes to help so he wouldn’t have to lean down as far.
“Come on Troy, let’s go home.”
With that said they walked towards Troy’s car hand in hand. They ignored the stares and off-the-wall comments of the other students. Nikki had a feeling that this was the way it was suppose to be.
“Troy are you serious about wanting to take me to the Spring Formal?”
“Well isn’t it customary for boyfriend/girlfriend to go together to the Spring Formal?”
“Yes, but…”
“There you have your answer, no buts about it.”
They got into Troy’s pickup and headed towards Nikki’s house.
“See you tomorrow at school Nikki.” Troy said as Nikki got out. “Oh and wear something sexy.”
Before Nikki could respond he pulled away. “I wonder about him sometimes.” Nikki said to herself as she walked to her front door.
Friday, March 4th
“Hey gorgeous.” Troy said as he sauntered over to Nikki and his locker.
“Hey yourself.” Nikki said smiling. Seeing as how he told her to wear something sexy, she chose a knee length blue skirt, her reason behind picking it was that it was the same color as Troy’s eyes. To go with her skirt she wore a pair of calf high black boots, knowing that Troy had a thing for boots. The shirt she chose was a deep purple to help set off her eyes.
“You are looking sexy today Nikki.”
“I aim to please.” Nikki said.
Amanda walked over just as Troy leaned down to kiss Nikki. “What’s going on?” Amanda asked.
“I’m kissing my girlfriend.” Troy said. Amanda’s jaw dropped.
“I have to get to class.” Nikki said. “I’ll see you guys at lunch time.”
“I’ll be missing you till then.” Troy said.
“You know you didn’t say that yesterday.”
“I may not have said it, but I thought it.” Troy grinned. “Now get out of here before I do something I regret.”
Nikki shook her head and headed towards the choir room. When she entered a couple of the girls started clapping. Not sure why she ignored them and got her folder of music.
“I can’t believe you punched Melissa in the nose.” One of her fellow classmates said.
“It’s true Kara, I punched Mel.”
“Why did you do it?” Kara asked.
“She slapped Troy for no good reason, though she probably that it was a good reason.”
“Oh, that’s right you and Troy are an item.” Another member said as she walked over.
“Vicky, I don’t know if I’d call us an item just yet.”
“As soon as he kisses you on either the bleachers by the football field or the bleachers in the gym you’re an item.” Vicky said. “And from what I heard he kissed you at the football bleachers.”
“Okay, he did kiss me by the bleachers.”
“So you guys are an item then.” Kara said in slow realization.
Just then the bell rang for class to start Nikki, Kara and Vicky all took their seats on the raisers.
“Good morning everybody. Let’s get started. Why wait?” The teacher said. She called off everybody’s name. When she was done she added. “Nikki, you need to go to Student Services. So you can take the attendance with you.”
“Yes, Mrs. Lite.” Nikki said as she got up and got the attendance. She left class wondering why she would be called down to Student Services. She reached the door to Student Services the same time Troy did.
“Fancy meeting you here.” He said. “You don’t normal bring the attendance for choir.”
“This is true.” Nikki said opening the door. “But Mrs. Lite said I needed to come here and that I might as well bring the attendance slip with me.”
Troy followed Nikki into Student Services. Nikki got to the counter and pu the attendance slip in the proper bin. Just as she was going to tell the aid she was there Mel walked in.
“What are you doing here?” She asked as she slowly walked over to put the slip she had in the same bin Nikki had just used. “You normal don’t bring the attendance down.”
Nikki was about to say something when the vice principal came around the counter.
“Ah, just the three students I need to see.” He said.
“Hello coach.” Troy said. “How are you this morning?”
“I’m quite alright Troy.” The vice principal answered. “Nikki, Mel, how are you ladies this morning?”
“I’m merely wondering why you wanted to talk to me, Mr. Tau.” Mel answered.
“Mel he called us down here to talk about that I’m sure.” Nikki said pointing to the bandage on Mel’s nose. “Oh and I’m fine Mr. Tau.”
“That’s good to hear Nikki. And you were right about the reason for me calling you down.” Mr. Tau said. “Please let’s go to my office.”
Melissa went first around the counter to Mr. Tau’s office, followed by Troy, who had reached a hand back to comfort Nikki who held it. Mr. Tau took up the rear. When they got to the office there were already three chairs in front of the sleek contemporary-looking black desk. Mr. Tau took a seat behind the desk.
“Please have a seat. Now you are all aware of the reason you are down here. I know it happened after school, but it was on school grounds, that is why I need to address this issue.” He said looking at all three of them. “Now I’m going to ask each of you the story behind the incident. I’m going to do it individually, so there are no interruptions from the other two. Is this understood?”
Troy and Nikki nodded their heads to acknowledge they understood. Mel just stared at Mr. Tau.
“Good. Mel, you can come with me. I’d like to hear your version first.”
“Alright.” Mel got up and followed him to an adjoining conference room. He shut the door so Troy and Nikki wouldn’t hear what was said.
“I wonder what she’ll tell him.” Nikki said quietly.
“Don’t worry about it. If I know her it isn’t going to be the truth.” Troy said.
“I suppose you’re right, you know her better then I do.”
They say in silence for the remainder of the time Mel and Mr. Tau were talking. As if trying to console and comfort her, Troy touched the back of her hand lightly. When Mel and Mr. Tau came out, it looked as if Mel had been crying.
“Nikki, it’s your turn.” Mr. Tau said as Mel took her seat.
“Okay.” Nikki replied and got up. She walked over to the conference table and sat down. Mr. Tau closed the door.
“Nikki, I know it’s not good to miss too much of rehearsal with your spring concert coming up. So I’ll try not to keep you.” Mr. Tau said politely. Nikki studied him. He was a short man, he only stood five five, but he had an athletic build. He had short black hair that was sleeked back with gel. He wore a tailored navy blue suit. “I just need to ask a few questions.”
“That’s fine, I’m willing to help clear up this matter. Even if it means missing rehearsal.”
“At least you’re willing to cooperate. Can you tell me why you were at the bleachers yesterday?”
“Troy had asked me to meet him there at three twenty.”
“Was he also planning on meeting Melissa there?”
“Yes at three thirty. They discussed the time at lunch via Kim, one of Melissa’s friends.”
“Yes at three thirty. They discussed the time at lunch via Kim, one of Melissa’s friends.”
“Was Kim also at the bleachers?”
“Yes.”
“Can you tell me what was said that lead up to you punching Melissa?”
“I had wanted to leave when Melissa and Kim showed up at three thirty, but Troy asked me to stay. Troy confronted Mel about the rumor that was going around, the one that was saying that Troy had dumped Mel to go out with me. Which wasn’t true, until the bleachers.” Nikki said. “Anyways, Melissa lied about not knowing the rumor, which Kim started. Anyways, Mel got mad that Troy dumped her for me. So she slapped him, after she called me Repunzle, and I called her Miss Perfect. And she said ‘yes I am Miss Perfect’ Troy said far from it. And she asked him to repeat it. He did and she slapped him. Then before I even thought of the consequences I punched her.”
“It seems like it was a good reason, you were defending your friend. But it still wasn’t right.”
“Oh I know it wasn’t right but it just happened. I mean I’m willing to suffer the consequences.”
“Thanks, I think we’re done. Why don’t you go and send Troy in for me.”
“Sure, Mr. Tau.” Nikki said getting up and walking to the door. She opened it and stepped out of the conference room. “Troy, you’re up.”
“K.” He said as he got up and walked over to Nikki. He gave her a pat on the shoulder and walked into the conference room. He shut the door behind him.
“Well what did you tell Mr. Tau? All lies I’m sure.” Melissa said.
“I don’t lie about punching you in the nose. I told the truth.” Nikki said. “What does it matter what I told him? It’s not like you’re gonna get in trouble. You’ll still have a perfect record.”
“You don’t get it, do you? I’ve never been dumped before. I’ve always done the dumping. And now to be dumped for the likes of you, well it’s more then I can bare.”
“Okay, I’m going to go and sit in the main area, otherwise I might do something I regret.” Nikki said getting up and walking to the door. She opened it and walked out. Nikki decided to sit outside the door instead. She didn’t know how long she sat out there thinking and pondering, but all or a sudden Troy came and tapped her on the shoulder.
“It’s time to come in.” He said offering his hand. Nikki took it and he helped her up.
