Chapter V
I went to my locker. My best friend, Kara, came and said, "Excuse me, but I think you have the wrong locker."
"No, I have the right locker. My name is Samantha Koch," I said back.
"Sammie! Is it really you?" Kara asked. "It can’t be."
"Why not?"
"Because Sammie doesn’t have scars on her face! That’s why." Kara said.
"It’s me. I was in a car accident over the summer. Swan said she had gotten a hold of you." I told her.
"Swan never got a hold of me. That explains why you didn’t call me at all during the summer. Tell me about it." She said rapidly.
"Drunk driver." I said calmly.
"How can you be so calm?" Kara asked. I could tell she was stunned.
"I had a lot of time on my hands. I prayed and talk with Jay about it. I forgave the guy a short time after I learned why he had been drinking." I said quietly.
"What was the reason he had for drinking?" asked Kara.
"He was celebrating the birth of his first child, a son." I told her.
"You forgave him when you heard that reason?" She asked as we started towards class.
"Yes, it may sound silly to you. But yes I forgave because God gave him that child." I simply stated.
As we reached the class room door Kara said, "No it’s not silly. Maybe for you that’s all the reason you needed but for me I need more."
Almost all day that went on people coming up asking who I was and once finding out asking what happened. I couldn’t believe how many people hadn’t heard of the accident.
Jay needs to use a cane for a while until his leg heals properly. All his friends are bummed because he won’t be playing football. But Jay doesn’t mind, he thinks the team is great with or without him.
Chapter VI
I could tell Jay was sad that he wasn’t playing football. I talked to the coach and asked if Jay could work on the sidelines. The coach said okay, as long as Jay didn’t mind. So I went to Jay and asked, "If you can’t play on the field. What’s the next best thing?"
"Working on the sidelines. Why?" he asked puzzled."The coach said it was al right for you to work on the sidelines." I told him.
"How do you know?:" Jay asked. I could tell he was getting excited.
"I asked him. That’s how." I replied.
"You just asked Coach and he said yes?" Jay asked again.
"What part don’t you understand the ‘y’, the ‘e’, or the ‘s’ or is it the whole word?" I asked jokingly.
"Thanks, Sammie." Jay said overjoyed.
The next day I went to talk to Coach again.
"Coach can I talk to you?" I asked after I knocked.
"Your Jay Koch’s sister, aren’t you? What can I do for you?" he asked in a hurry.
"Yes, I’m Jay’s sister. I was wondering if until Jay’s able to play, if I, um, could play in his place? I know I’m a girl, but I’m good. Jay taught me everything I know. So what do you sat Coach?"
"How much has he taught you?" He shot back.
"When he got home from practice he’d teach me what he learned and when he was a freshman and I was in sixth grade. That coach let me come to practice. I played, excuse me, scrimmaged with them. The coach told Jay that if I was old enough, he’d put me on the team." I told him.
"Tryouts are Thursday after school. Come prepared for a workout."
"Thanks, Coach. Oh Coach, don’t tell Jay. I want it to be a surprise." I told him.
"Got it. See you Thursday." The coach said as I headed out the door.
Chapter VII
Thursday came faster then I wanted it to.
"Mom, I’m going to stay after school for awhile. Is that ok?" I asked."Why?"
"I want to study in the library for a test tomorrow." I answered.
"Okay. I’ll have someone pick you up. What time?"
"How about 6:45?"
"Sounds good, Sammie. Just as long as you get some other work done." Mom said.
When I got to school, I went to my locker and got rid of my books. I started towards my class when Jarrad, one of Jay’s friends, came up.
"Hi, Samantha. Is Jay going to tryouts tonight?"
"I don’t think so. Coach said he could work the sidelines. Jarrad, I want to tell you something. But you can’t tell Jay, okay?" I pleaded.
"Sure. What is it?" He asked.
"I asked Coach if I could play in Jay’s place till he got better." I told him.
"You’re kidding. What did Coach say?" He asked.
"He said to come to tryouts. So I’m going too."
"What did your mom say?"
"She doesn’t know. She thinks I’m studying fir a test. So someone’s picking me up at 6:45." I told him.
"Call your mom and tell her I’ll bring you home."
"Okay. I will, thanks Jarrad."
I made it to class just in time. The day sped by, I was able to call mom right after school.
"Hello?" Swan answered.
"Swan, is mom home?" I asked.
"Yeah, just a sec."
"Hello," Mom said.
"Mom, it’s me Sammie. Jarrad has football tryouts and said he’d give me a ride home. Is that okay?"
"That’s fine dear. We’ll see you when you get home. Have fun studying for your test." She answered.
"Thanks, bye." I said hanging up.
Chapter VIII
I started towards the field where tryouts were going to be held. Jarrad came running up to me. His blond hair bobbing up and down, his muscles lose under his skin. He was small for his age, only five feet five inches, but a good football player.
"Hi, Jarrad. Mom said it was alright for you to give me a ride home." I told him.
"Cool. You ready for tryouts?" he asked."As I’ll ever be, I guess."
All the guys were asking Jarrad what I was doing there. He told them that I came to tryout. The coach ran us trough drill after drill. We did passing plays, running plays and even a few rushing plays. All the guys were amazed at how well I did.
It was six o’clock when tryouts ended. The coach said, "Take a knee. I’m going to call off the names of those who didn’t make it. I repeat did not make it. Freeman, Lust, Krieg, Grindell, and…wait that’s the wrong person. And Waren."
"You picked Koch over me?" Krieg asked with a twang of anger in his voice.
"Koch put more effort in this one tryout, then you have in your whole football career here. That’s why." The coach said.
"I’ll get you, Koch." Said Krieg.
"You can try but it won’t do you any good." I said right back.
"Come on Samantha. Let’s head home." Jarrad said.
"Oh, Jarrad, are you in love with her?" Krieg asked.
"No. I told her mom I’d give her a ride home. So they wouldn’t have to chase out here."
"Yeah, right." Krieg said.
"Do you want to fight, Krieg, is that it?" I could tell Jarrad was getting mad. He started to clench his fists. I grabbed his arm.
"Come on Jarrad let’s get going. I have other work to do. I don’t want to nurse you back to health like I did with Jay." I said calmly.
"Ok. I’m coming."
"Run home to mommy, little girl." Krieg sang.
That did it. Nothing stopped me. I swung around and gave him a blow under the chin.
"What the?" Jarrad asked.
"Krieg, leave me and Jarrad alone. Or I’ll do much worse. I told Krieg.
"You, you, Bit-"Krieg started to say but Coach interrupted. "Krieg you’re suspended from all football games. That means you can’t even watch the game. Got it? Now off my field."
Chapter IX
The next day as I sat down to eat lunch, Krieg came up.
"Well, well, well what have we got here?" he asked."Hi, Krieg. What can I do for you?" I asked.
"You can start by giving me your lunch or standing still so I can hit you like you did me." He almost screamed.
Just over his shoulder I saw Jarrad. I stood up and said, "Alright, Krieg. I’ll let you hit me." I raised my arm so my sleeve would fall down. It worked, I got Jarrad’s attention.
"Krieg, can I help you?" Jarrad said behind Krieg.
"Jarrad, stay out of this!" He screamed.
"You know the rules. Pick on one player, you pick on all the players." Jarrad said it loud enough for the rest of the players to hear. Shortly after Krieg was surround with people from the team.
"You guys actually support this girl. I thought you were football players, not baby sitters." Krieg said.
"Krieg, I only intend to play until Jay’s able to play. If Coach keeps me on, he keeps me on." I told him.
"Krieg, why can’t you face the facts? Coach kicked you off the team." Lee told him.
"Lee this has nothing to do with you." Krieg screamed.
"That’s where you’re wrong." I told him. "If you pick on one player you pick on all of them."
"Okay. I’ll get you later little girl. When you least expect it." Krieg said.
"Right now nothing would surprise me." I said back as Krieg stormed off.
"I’d stay clear if I were you." Jarrad said.
"I plan to." I told him.
"Come on, Lee. Let’s get to class." Jarrad called.
"Jarrad, don’t you think we should escort Samantha to her next class?" Lee asked.
"Good idea," Jarrad said. "May we escort you to your next class?"
"You may." I answered laughing.
Chapter X
"Jay, what time do you have to be there for football?" I asked.
"Let me see. The game starts at six o’clock. So about five, why?""Well could you give me and Jarrad a ride there? Jarrad would but his car broke down." I told him.
"Are you sure you don’t want to go with mom and dad?" he asked.
"Well, I was hoping we could talk." I told him.
"Sure. Even with Jarrad in the car?" he asked.
"Well, Jarrad already knows what I want to talk to you about."
"Yeah, I’ll give you a ride." He said.
"Thanks." I said giving him a kiss on the cheek.
