Samant’s Story
"I know what you’re trying to do. It isn’t going to work!" Jon the wizard said. Jon looked young for his age. He was actually fifteen. He had short light brown hair and eyes of gray. He was about five and a half feet tall. He wore a pair of deerskin pants that were dyed black and he wore a blue cloth shirt.
"You haven’t a clue as to what I’m trying to do," Gandof the wizard said. Gandof on the other hand looked old for his age, he being only fourteen. He had hair a little longer then Jon and it was also a little darker. He also had brown eyes. Gandof was the same height as Jon. Gandof wore the same kind of clothes as Jon, only Gandof’s pants were the natural color of the deerskin and his shirt was teal.
"Would you two stop! If you keep fighting you’ll wake the dragon. Do you want to do that?" I asked. I was seventeen. I had shoulder length brown hair, which I kept up in a braided ponytail. I was five feet, ten inches, tall for a girl in that time. My eyes were hazel. I usually wore a green dress that fell to just above my ankles and a green cloak that was darker then my dress. The cloak fell to my ankles.
"NO!" Gandof answered.
"Maybe…" answered Jon.
"I don’t know what I’m going to do with you Jon," I said looking at Jon.
"Yeah, Jon, what am I going to do with you?" Gandof said mockingly.
"DON’T YOU MAKE FUN OF SAMANT!" Jon said angrily.
"SAM, HELP ME!" Gandof begged.
"I’m staying out of it," I told him laughing.
"You should watch what you say Gandof, you could get seriously hurt," Jon said to Gandof, as he slowly walked towards him. Gandof ran to the other side of the table, trying to stay away from Jon.
"Gandof you are a chicken," Jon told him.
Just as Gandof was coming around the table Healer Kiya and Dragon Knight Alric walked in. Kiya was only five feet, five inches tall. She had red hair and green eyes. She could be annoying and used it to her advantage sometimes. Kiya, when she could get away with it would wear pants and a shirt, but seeing as she usually couldn’t she wore a black and purple dress. Alric on the other hand was an inch taller than Jon and Gandof. He had dark brown hair and brown eyes. And he wore the traditional dragon knight armor.
"What are you guys up to?" Kiya asked Jon and Gandof.
"Oh nothing much. What can we do for you, Kiya?" Gandof asked as he slowly walked away from Jon. "What brings you to our neck of the woods, so to speak?"
"I came to get some things from Samant. That’s all," Kiya told Gandof.
"Kiya, what was it that you asked for again? It’s hard to remember anything with these two around."
"I just needed that new book that I ordered and sent here. I’ve been waiting for it," Kiya replied. "I hope you don’t mind that I had it sent here. The company isn’t very happy with me."
"No, I don’t mind but what did you do this time. To get them upset with you?" I asked Kiya, as I got the book.
"Nothing much. At least I don’t think it was."
"Kiya, you could at least tell them the truth," Alric said.
"I don’t think they want to be bored with details, Alric," was Kiya response.
"Very well I’ll tell them myself, then," he said.
As Alric was relating the story I looked around the room. Jon was still glaring at Gandof, but was listening to Alric. Kiya was looking down at her feet. Gandof had his eye on Jon while slowly moving away. Alric was using his hands while he talked.
"Alric, stop exaggerating. That’s not how it happened. You know it too," Kiya said giving him a playful hit on the arm.
"If you insist," he said as he gave her a peck on the cheek.
"Awwww, how cute!" Gandof said, now standing next to me.
"Don’t start Gandof," Alric warned.
"Gandof, today must be your day for getting into trouble. You think?" Jon declared harshly.
"Nah, couldn’t be. It’s just your day to get mad. Alric’s too," replied Gandof.
Kiya looked from Gandof to Jon and then back to Gandof. She then looked at me as if asking what they were talking about.
"How rude of me. Won’t you join us for lunch? It’s Jon’s turn to cook," I asked
"I think we can stay for lunch if it’s all right with Kiya," Alric responded.
"I think it’s all right. Jon what are you making?" Kiya asked.
"I hadn’t decided. I was too busy trying to get Gandof. I’ll make my special, brussel sprouts and turkey meatloaf," Jon answered.
"Sounds good Jon. We’ll stay," Kiya said.
As Jon went about making lunch, Gandof and Alric talked about making Alric’s armor stronger. Kiya and I started going over some of the simple spells that I was trying to teach her.
"I’ll never get these spells Samant. They just don’t want to work for me," Kiya complained.
"You’ll get them Kiya. You’re just not a wizard and it’ll take longer," I said trying to comfort her.
"It’ll take time, Kiya. Don’t worry you’ll get it," Gandof said looking up from his spell book.
"Here take this," I said handing her my first spell book. "It’s the one I started with."
"Okay, I better get this," Kiya said taking the spell book.
"Don’t worry, you’ll get it," Alric said coming over and giving Kiya a hug.
"I hope so," she said, giving him a hug back.
"Come and get it," Jon called.
"OH GOOD, LUNCH!" Gandof exclaimed.
I went and got out the plates and glasses. Alric and Kiya sat one side, with Gandof across from Kiya and me across from Alric. Jon sat at the head of the table. We each filled our plates and started to eat.
"Have any of you talked to Hiei lately? He was supposed to come and see me about healing his arm from the last battle," Kiya said.
"No I haven’t. He said he was going to come and see me about making is armor stronger," Gandof replied.
"I haven’t seen him since we last battled together," Alric said.
"Neither Samant or I have seen Hiei since he asked Sam to make Yazoo talk. That must have been just before the last battle," Jon said.
"Oh. Is there anyway you can find him, you three?" Kiya inquired.
"I haven’t tried before," I told her. "Have either of you two?"
"I have once, but it didn’t work out," Jon replied.
"Twice here. It didn’t work the first time, but it did the second," Gandof said happily.
"Gandof, would you be so kind as to see if you can find him for Kiya? And if you can’t find Hiei, see if you can find Yazoo. Those two are inseparable," I advised Gandof.
"I’ll see what I can do. I’m not guaranteeing anything," he replied.
"Thank you. I don’t know how he’s made it this far with as bad as he said his arm was. I hope he’s okay. He’s one of the better knights," Kiya said.
"Hey, what about me?" Alric asked.
"I said that Hiei was one of the better knights. He’s not the best. You are," Kiya said.
"Here’s your spell book Gandof," I said handing the spell book to Gandof.
"Thank you, Samant. Now where is that blasted spell?!" Gandof said as he flipped through the pages.
"Isn’t it on page 65,429?" Jon asked.
"Yes, I think you’re right," Gandof said flipping to page 65,429. "Here it is. Let’s see if I can get it to work."
As Gandof looked through the spell to see what he needed, Alric and Kiya talked about their wedding day.
"Let’s do it. Samant can you hand me my staff?" Gandof asked.
"Sure," I said handing Gandof his staff.
"Okay, stand back everyone," Jon said.
"I’m going to take us to him and hopefully it will work."
Gandof started chanting the spell, when all of a sudden we were in the middle of a battle. We all started looking around.
"Where are we?" Kiya asked.
"We must be somewhere near Hiei, to be here," Jon said.
"There’s Hiei!" I said pointing.
"Come on let’s go help him," Alric said, running over to Hiei.
"WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING HERE?" Hiei yelled over the noise. Hiei had blonde hair that fell to his shoulders and he had gray eyes. He was the same height as Alric. He wore the traditional dragon knight armor, like Alric.
"LOOKING FOR YOU!" I yelled back.
"I WAS GETTING WORRIED ABOUT YOU NOT SHOWING UP TO GET HEALED!" Kiya shouted.
"SORRY DIDN’T MEAN TO WORRY YOU. I WAS FIGHTING. HAVE YOU GUYS SEEN YAZOO?"" Hiei bellowed.
"WE THOUGHT YAZOO WAS WITH YOU?" Jon screamed.
"I HAVEN’T SEEN HIM SINCE THE BATTLE STARTED," Hiei shouted.
"WE’LL HELP YOU BATTLE," Gandof shouted at Hiei.
"IF YOU WANT TO," Hiei said.
"I’M HELPING. I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE OTHERS," I shouted.
I started to cast hurt spells on the enemies. Then Gandof and Jon started to cast hurt spells also. Alric helped Hiei fight. Kiya just stood and healed us. When the battle was over the only enemy left standing was the evil wizard, Zyzzyva. Zyzzyva had jet-black hair with streaks of white. He had gray eyes and wore a black robe.
"You’ll never get me!" Zyzzyva said.
"I’m surprised you even showed up, Zyzzyva," Jon said.
"I have my reasons for showing up. You should know what they are by now, Jon," Zyzzyva told him.
"Why do you want me so bad, Zyzzyva?" I asked him.
"You are one of us. We want you back. Is that to much to ask?" Zyzzyva asked.
"You can’t have her!" Jon said stepping in front of me. "She doesn’t want to be like you."
"You are pitiful you know that," Zyzzyva said to Jon. "She has more power then both you and that other wizard together. She has more power then I have."
"How can I have more power then Jon and Gandof?" I asked Zyzzyva.
"Come with me and I’ll show you," he said.
"Show me here in front of my friends. I will hide nothing from them," I told him.
"Fine, if that’s the way you want it. It won’t be my fault if you don’t like what you see or hear," Zyzzyva said.
Zyzzyva took all of us to his place. He opened a book and started flipping through it.
"In here is the history of every wizard, good and evil. On each page it gives the page number of the wizard’s parents, siblings, and so on. If you look under your name it gives your parents names. Would you read them for me?"
"Lysander is the name of the father and Helena is the name of the mother," I read from the book.
"And what were the names of your parents?" Zyzzyva asked.
"I have no parents," I said.
"Very well. What does it say for siblings?"
"It has your name under siblings."
"As it should," he said.
"How is that possible?" Alric asked.
"I shall tell you the story. I’m sure you don’t want to read," Zyzzyva said.
"You’re right it would be easier for you to explain then have us read it," Kiya said.
"Let’s see where to start?" he said.
"The beginning would be a good place," Jon said losing his patience.
"Alright. At the time you were born there was no need for evil female wizards. So the mighty one made a law that all females born were to be killed at the age of three months, unless otherwise noted. Our father didn’t want to see any of his children killed, so he asked me to take you to one of the good wizards. The good wizard was a friend of dad’s; how they met I don’t know. Anyway, I brought you over and the good wizard agreed to take care of you till our father came to get you. Unfortunately the good wizard died before dad had a chance to come get you," Zyzzyva said.
"Whoa," Gandof, Alric, and Kiya said at the same time.
"Anything else, Zyzzyva?" Jon asked.
"Yes as a matter of fact. Now our female population is dying out. That’s why the mighty one wants Samant. I don’t know how he figured out where you were. But he sent me to get you. If I fail, he’ll probably have me killed. That’s about it I guess."
"I don’t know what to think," I said sitting on a rock.
"Samant, you ok?" Jon said kneeling in front of me.
"I think so, Jon," I told him. "Zyzzyva, is that the only reason he wants me back, because he needs females?"
"As far as I know. He gave me no other reason at the time he sent me out," he answered.
"You tell your mighty one that he can’t have her. She’s not who he thinks she is," Jon said glaring at Zyzzyva.
"I hope she’s not who he thinks she is either. I don’t want her to get hurt by him. My time is up. Are you coming with me Samant?" Zyzzyva asked.
"I will not go with you, Zyzzyva. I belong here, with my friends," I told him, taking hold of Jon’s hand and looking at everyone else. "You’ll have to leave without me."
"He will send someone else you know that," he said before he vanished.
"I won’t let them take you. You know that don’t you?" Jon asked me.
"Yes, I know," I said hugging him. "I’ll never let them take me either."
"I won’t let them take you either," Gandof said.
"Same here," Alric, Kiya, and Hiei said.
"Let’s get out of here and look for Yazoo," I said trying to get my mind off of what Zyzzyva said.
"Good idea," Gandof said transporting us back to where the battle took place.
"Where did you last see Yazoo, Hiei?" Kiya asked.
"Yazoo was right next to me before the battle started. He was talking about fish," Hiei said.
"Maybe he’s by the lake. I’ll go check," Gandof said running towards the lake.
"I’ll go check the other lake," Kiya said.
"I’ll go with her," Alric said following Kiya.
"Maybe he’s in the woods somewhere. I’ll start over there," I said pointing to the south.
"I’ll check the north area," Jon said.
"Hiei, why don’t you stay here in case he comes back," I suggested.
"Ok," said Hiei.
As everyone went their separate ways I noticed a strange sound coming further south. I started towards it.
"Yazoo, is that you?" I asked.
"Go away. They’ll hurt you," Yazoo said, just as I reached him. Yazoo was a small orange cat that had a white stripe down his back. He didn’t like to fight much but when need be he’d use fire.
"Who are they, Yazoo?" I asked him.
"GRAB HER!" someone shouted.
I felt someone grab my arms and hold them behind them. They started to drag me further into the woods.
"LET GO OF ME!" I yelled.
"I don’t think so. You are very important to us. We can’t let you get away," the person said.
"HELP!" I shouted hoping someone would hear me.
"Don’t even try to yell. It’s highly unlikely that they’ll hear you. The mighty one is waiting," the one who held my arms told me.
"I can try can’t I?" I asked.
"You can, but save your breath," the third one said.
As we got further into the woods, I transformed into a wolf. The one couldn’t hold me any more because there was nothing to hold. I ran towards were Hiei was hoping he was still there and hadn’t moved. After a while I changed into a rabbit so I could hide easier. I finally reached the spot.
"Look at the rabbit, Alric. Isn’t it cute?" Kiya asked.
"Yeah, it is kinda cute," Alric said.
Just as Alric said that I transformed back into my human form. They looked at me with their eyes wide.
"Sorry, some people tried to take me somewhere. I changed into a wolf and then a rabbit. Yazoo is over there somewhere. I think about five or six yards in."
"I’ll go look," Gandof said heading off.
"Be careful," I said after him. "Those people could still be out there."
We all waited for Gandof and Yazoo, hoping that those people weren’t still out there. It was taking longer then should have and everyone was starting to worry.
"What is taking so long?" Hiei asked pacing back and forth.
"Maybe they have Gandof," Kiya said.
"Let’s hope they don’t," Alric said.
"I’m going to go look for him," Jon said heading into the woods.
"No, not by yourself you don’t," I said. "I’m going with you."
"Samant, what if they’re still out there?" Kiya asked.
"That’s something I’m going to have to risk," I told her.
"Kiya and Alric stay behind in case they come back. Hiei you come with us," Jon said. "This way it will be three on three."
"Jon, you’re going to risk her life for Gandof and Yazoo?" Kiya asked.
"Kiya, I’ve learned that some cases it just doesn’t pay to argue. This is one of those cases," he replied.
"Oh," was all Kiya had to say.
"Shall we?" I asked.
"Yeah, let’s go," Hiei said.
We started towards the woods, when Yazoo and Gandof came walking out. Yazoo jumped up on Hiei.
"Sorry. We got turned around in the woods. That and Yazoo was kinda hard to untie, he kept twisting making the rope tighter and tighter," Gandof explained.
"It wasn’t my fault. I was trying to get free," Yazoo told Gandof.
"Yazoo, it’s good to see you," I said.
"Samant, how is my favorite wizard?"
"I’m fine, Yazoo. Thank you for asking," I said.
"Fine, don’t say hi to the rest of us," Kiya said jokingly.
"Sorry. Hello everyone," Yazoo said.
"Hi Yazoo," Alric, Jon, Gandof and Hiei said together.
"Who tied you up in the tree, Yazoo?" Gandof asked.
"They said they were here to get Samant and that they were going to use me as bait. Can you believe it ME as bait?" Yazoo said.
"What else did they say Yazoo?" I asked.
"Let me see. I don’t think they knew I understood them. One of them said that the mighty one would be happy to get you. The other one said the mighty one was going into awful mood waiting for someone to bring you home. Why do they want you so bad, Samant?" Yazoo asked.
"As far as I can tell and from what Zyzzyva said, they want me because they need females. But that’s all I know, Yazoo," I told him.
"I wonder if that’s the whole reason," Jon said.
"What are you thinking, Jon?" Alric asked.
"I want to go see the damsel. I think she can help. Anybody object?" Jon asked.
"No," We said in unison.
Jon transported us to the damsel’s castle. It was enormous. We walked to the drawbridge and pulled the rope to announce that we were there.
"Who is it?" Someone on the other said asked.
"It is Jon the wizard," Jon said.
"Gandof the wizard," Gandof said.
"Samant the wizard," I said.
"Healer Kiya," Kiya said.
"Dragon Knight Alric," Alric said.
"Dragon Knight Hiei," Hiei said.
"Yazoo the cat." Yazoo said.
"We would like to see the damsel," Jon said.
"I’ll go see if she can see you. Wait here, please," The person said.
We waited for the person to return. We stood nervously by the door, hoping the damsel would see us.
"Listen. I hear footsteps," I said.
"The damsel will see you," The person said, lowering the drawbridge.
"Good. I want to tell here what’s going on," Jon said.
"Follow me," The person said.
We followed the person to the damsel’s chamber. It was quaint and cozy. The damsel sat on a stool near a fire.
"What reason has brought you here to my castle?" The damsel asked us. Damsel had long black hair and brown eyes. She was short like Kiya and wore a red and white dress.
"Damsel, it is I that require an answer. It is I that brought my friends here to your castle," Jon said stepping forward.
"To what question do you require an answer?" The damsel said now looking at Jon.
"Damsel, I would not disturb you if the question was not important. I want to know if you have an answer as to why the evil mighty one wants Samant?"
"You are Jon the wizard are you not?"
"I am Jon the wizard, Damsel."
"I know that the question you ask means a lot to you. I will give you answer once you do me a favor. Will you except?"
"Damsel, I except. What favor do you require?" Jon asked.
"My dragon and knight have gone away. Can you find them and give them a message?" She asked of him.
"My dear Damsel, I would ask you if my fellow wizards could help me. One wizard alone cannot summon the dragon for he is too big. But two can. The knight needs but one."
"The other wizards may help you in any way possible. But you have but one day to do the favor," The damsel told Jon.
"Damsel, I have a question also. That I just thought of and wish to ask," I said stepping up.
"Samant is it not?" The Damsel asked.
"It is. If you don’t mind, I’m sure you will ask a favor of me also. My favor is helping Jon bring the dragon and the knight," I told her.
"That is fine. What is your question, Samant?"
"My question has two parts. The first is what was the name of the wizard who raised me? The second why was I not informed earlier that I was born evil, but raised good?" I asked her.
"I shall answer the second question now, the first one later. I am not sure if you will like the answer I give you," She said.
"It does not matter, Damsel. All I ask for is an answer," I told her.
"Very well. It was not I that kept the answer from you but my father. He said someone called Zyzzyva, told him that he brought his half sister here. Father said that her name was Samant. He also said that she was to be raised good. And under no circumstance was she to be told that she was born evil. I know that father was going to tell you when you reached the age of twenty. But you seem to have found out already. Now I have a question for you, Samant," The Damsel said.
"Yes Damsel what is your question for me?" I asked.
"How did you find out?"
"Jon, Gandof, and I transported ourselves, along with Alric and Kiya, to where Hiei was. After Hiei was done battling there stood one person left. It was Zyzzyva. He told me and the rest what happened and that the mighty one wants me back. That’s how I found out."
"Damsel, we almost have the dragon," Gandof and Jon said at the same time
"Where is he?" The Damsel asked.
"We are attempting to bring him here to the castle right now. He’s not very willing," They said.
"I have the knight," I said. "I bringing him here also."
"My dragon and knight will return home!" The damsel exclaimed.
Just as Damsel was saying that the knight and dragon appeared outside her window. The damsel looked out the window.
"Why was I brought here?" The knight and dragon said at the same time.
"MY KNIGHT. MY DRAGON. YOU’RE HOME," The damsel yelled out the window.
"MY DAMSEL, WHY HAVE YOU BROUGHT US HERE?" The knight asked.
"COME UP AND I SHALL TELL YOU THE REASON," The damsel shouted.
The knight headed towards the drawbridge and went in. While we waited for the knight to come in, Alric and Kiya were in the corner whispering. Gandof was staring down at the dragon from the window. I took a quick glance at the dragon. He was fairly large as most dragons are. He had blue scales that looked purple when hit just right by the sun. Then I looked and saw Jon was looking at me with a weird look on his face.
"Jon, what is it?" I asked.
"I was thinking of something, that’s all," He said walking over to me and taking my hand in his.
"What is it that you ponder?" I asked.
"It’s just why’d they want to wait so long to tell you, you were born evil?"
"I don’t know. That is something to ponder."
"Here comes the knight," Hiei said.
The knight walked through the door. He took off his helmet. He went to the damsel and kissed her hand. She blushed and hugged her knight. He had on his armor, of course. His hair was brown. It was hard to tell his build under the armor but he was roughly 5’8".
"My dearest Damsel, why have you asked these three wizards to bring me and the dragon back?" The knight asked.
"My knight, I was alone. You left unexpectedly and with out saying good-bye. Besides you said you would only be gone a few days, it has been a few months," The damsel replied. "I was worried."
"We are home now, Damsel. I shall get the dragon’s home in order. Heaven forbid he stay outside," The knight said departing.
"Now, Damsel, for our answers," I said.
"Yes. The answer to Jon’s question first. Why does the mighty one want Samant? He wants her to keep up the evil wizard population. That is all I know for certain. But I also believe that he plans on having Samant be his great great grandson’s bride, when he finally gets her back," The damsel said.
"Who is the mighty one’s great great grandson?" Gandof asked.
"That I do not know. The answer now to Samant’s first question."
"Yes Damsel I await the answer you give," I said kneeling before her.
"The name of the wizard was Zanthia," The damsel said.
"Where can I find out about him, Damsel?" I asked.
"That I do not know for sure. You might want to try the oldest wizard. He might know something about Zanthia."
"I shall go visit the oldest wizard," I said heading for the door.
"Samant, do you want us to come with you or do you want to do it alone?" Jon asked looking me in the eye.
"I want you guys to come along. But I think this is something I have to do by myself," I said.
"Oh. Good luck then," Jon said turning away.
I left not wanting to hurt Jon anymore then I already had. Everyone said good-bye as I left. As I reached the stairs I could hear Gandof talking to Jon telling him not to worry. I ran down the stairs and out the door. I transported myself to the oldest wizard’s house. It was a dismal place; all the plants were either dying or dead. I walked up to the door and knocked.
