Seniors to the Rescue
"Look Mike, it’s snowing again," the girl said to her friend as they sat in the commons and ate lunch. Mike had blonde hair that was cut like he should be in the army. He was taller then her. Mike watched her as she stared out the window. She had shoulder length brown hair that curled at the ends. Her hazel eyes were always full of excitement. She was taller then most of the girls in their class but Mike didn’t mind. She turned around and looked at him."Mike, are you watching me again?" she asked as she lifted her soda can to take a drink.
"I guess I was, Sunshine. Sorry I can’t help it, it’s just that you’re so…" Mike said trailing off.
"Mike, must you call me that? It feels weird." Samantha said.
"I’m sorry. It’s just that, that’s my nickname for you."
Samantha smiled and went back to watching the snow. Mike picked at his food and went back to watching Samantha.
"Hey, Sam, heads up," another boy said tossing a bag of chips at Samantha.
"Hey, Eric," she said as she caught the bag of chips. Alric had light brown hair and dark brown eyes that reminded Sam of a puppy’s eyes. Eric was shorter then Mike. Eric sat down next to Sam on the bench by the table.
"So what’s up?" Eric said looking around the lunchroom.
"Not much." Mike said still watching Sam.
"Eric if you’re looking for Ana, forget about it. She went home for lunch." Sam told him and went back to eating lunch and watching it snow.
"Dang it. I wanted to give back her bracelet she asked me to fix. Oh well tomorrow I guess. Hey the snow is really starting to come down." He said as he got his sack lunch from his backpack.
"She had to do something at home otherwise should wouldn’t have gone." Mike said starting to eat more of his hot lunch.
Eric looked at Mike and noticed that pizza was the hot lunch for the day. He jumped off of the bench and ran to the counter. He grabbed two pieces of pizza, paid the lunch lady and came back to the table grinning.
"I love the pizza they serve." Eric said picking up one of the pieces.
"Alric, the way you eat you’ll get fat." Sam said patting Eric’s stomach.
"Nah, he burns it off running to the counter to get the food." Mike said laughing.
"Oh yea I forgot about the running." Sam said starting to laugh also.
"Hey, I resemble that," Eric said laughing.
"What’s so funny?" another boy said walking over and joining us.
"Hiya, Antonio. What’s new with you?" Eric questioned Antonio. Antonio, also in the same class as the other three, had reddish brown hair and hazel eyes that had tints of gray in them. He was a little shorter then Alric, but not much.
"Oh nothing really. My mom packed me a strange lunch again. You want to trade, Eric?" Antonio replied.
"Sure I always liked your mom’s lunches. Here’s mine." Eric said tossing his sack lunch to Antonio. Antonio caught the bag and looked in.
"All right leftovers," he said as he brought out two pieces of cold pizza, one piece of apple pie, and can of orange soda.
"You better hurry up the bell’s going to ring soon," Sam said picking up her mess. She walked over to the garbage can.
"Hey, be quiet. Mr. Tanbui’s going to speak." Mike said. Mr. Tanbui, everyone’s favorite vice principal, loved to talk on the loud speaker just to hear himself talk.
"This is your vice principal speaking. All of you should be use to the Wisconsin weather. School will continue."
"Gee, who wants to get out of school anyway?" Sam said sarcastically.
"Not me." Eric and Antonio said at the same time. Mike just laughed.
"This is your vice principal again. School will be let out at the end of fifth hour."
"Yes," all four of them said.
"I’m going to call Ana and tell her not to come back. I don’t think she’d want to try anyway." Sam said running over to the pay phone.
"Wouldn’t it be bizarre if we got stuck here." Antonio said.
"We just might. But I don’t want to think about that," Eric said.
"I wouldn’t mind being stuck, if it meant being with Sam," Mike said softly to himself.
Sam hung up the phone and headed towards the rest of the gang. She sat down and looked outside at the snow as it came down faster and faster.
"Umm… you guys. Do you think we’ll be able to get the cars out and started?" Sam said turning around to face them.
"Good point. Let’s go talk to Mr. Tanbui." Antonio said.
All four headed towards Mr. Tanbui’s office when there an announcement came over the loud speaker.
"Due to the weather school will be cancel. But due to the snowdrifts there is no way of getting out of the building. So everyone will have to stay here till we can get help. Thank you, that is all."
"Umm…now we know things are serious, that was the principal. If it wasn’t so bad Mr. Tanbui would have made it." Sam said.
The group of friends stopped in the hallway and looked at each other. Then they all got the same idea. They all grin.
"Do you think the gym teachers will mind us borrowing the cross country skis?" Eric said mischievously.
"Not if it was for the good of the school," Sam said as she started to run towards the gym.
"Yea, let’s do it." Mike said running after Sam.
Antonio and Eric looked at each other. They grinned again and went after Mike and Sam.
"Hey, Antonio. You can get the key to the equipment room, right?" Sam asked.
"Yep. I’m going to get it right now." Antonio said as he went to the gym offices. He opened the door and a few minutes later he came back, swinging the key.
"Here you are, Sam." Antonio said.
"Thank you," she said taking the key. Sam unlocked the door and went in. She rummaged around for a bit.
"Sam got the skis?" Eric said.
"Yep." Sam said coming out of the equipment room. She was carrying four sets of skis.
"I’ll get the poles," Mike said going in.
"Sam, has he asked you out yet?" Antonio asked.
"Antonio, not now! Besides he’ll ask me out when he’s ready. Now be quiet he’s coming back." Sam said as she handed Antonio his skis. Mike came back out and handed the others a set of poles.
"Silly ol’ Sam, you forgot the shoes," Eric said going into the room and bringing them out.
"Oops, I knew I was forgetting something," she said taking a pair of shoes from Eric. "Here give me your other shoes." Sam took the other shoes and went and put them in a gym locker. She came back out.
"Okay let’s go," Antonio said. As he tried to open the door. "Umm…a little help please."
"Sure." Mike said going over and helping Antonio open the door.
"Where are we heading?" Sam asked.
"Anywhere but here." Eric said going out.
The others followed him. They started heading towards some restaurants. Sam went up to Eric and started to ask him something. He shrugged his shoulders and kept heading towards the restaurants. Mike and Antonio came up to Sam.
"What did you ask?" Antonio asked.
"I asked if he was going to head and get help or if he was just thinking about food." Sam answered.
"Maybe he’s going to get food in his stomach and then think of what to do." Mike suggested.
"Maybe." Sam and Antonio said at the same time.
Antonio, Mike and Sam followed after Eric as he headed towards McDonald’s. They took off the skies at the door and carried them in.
"I’m gonna order the food what do you three want?" Antonio asked.
"I’ll have a number three plain, with french fries." Sam said.
"I’ll have a number three also but with ketchup only, and I want onion rings." Mike said.
"I’ll take a chicken fillet with mayo." Eric said as he headed towards the pay phone.
"I can help pay Antonio," Sam said.
"Thanks," Antonio said. "Oh what do you guys want to drink?"
"Pepsi." Mike and Sam said at the same time.
"Ok, two Pepsi, a mountain dew, and a Dr. Pepper for Eric." Antonio said.
Antonio and Sam went to the counter and ordered the food. Mike got napkins, straws and ketchup. Then he went and found a table. Eric came back and told the others that there weren’t any plows able to get out to the school. They were trying to get the main streets cleared first, but with the snow it was hard to keep up with. So it would be impossible for any to get to the school.
"Why don’t we just go back and shovel out one of the doorways. It couldn’t be that hard could if?" Mike asked.
"I’m assuming it’s a heavier snow. So I don’t know if we’d be able to." Antonio said.
